"On December 20, 1943, American pilot Charlie Brown was struggling to fly his crippled B-17 bomber home through German skies. With damaged engines, a destroyed tail, and a wounded crew, the plane was crippled. Luftwaffe ace Franz Stigler moved in for the kill, but as he pulled alongside, he saw the shredded fuselage and helpless airmen. As shooting down a defenseless crew was against his code of honor, Stigler couldn't pull the trigger. Instead, Stigler flew tight alongside the bomber, signalling German ground artillery to holding their fire until the escorted reached the ocean. He saluted the American and turned back. Brown made it to England, and nearly 50 years later, he tracked Stigler down. The two former enemies became lifelong best friends, remaining like brothers until both passed away in 2008."
