Kindness improved US-China relationship

The Donation: In 1999, while teaching English in China, Sakolsky saw a TV report about Yin Yuzhen, a woman fighting severe desertification in Inner Mongolia's Maowusu Desert on a tiny income. Moved by her struggle, he secured a $5,000 donation to help her buy saplings.

The Forest: The two lost touch for decades, but Yin used the money to plant trees that grew and multiplied. Over 27 years, that seed money blossomed into a massive forest of over 50,000 trees.

The Reunion: In May 2026, Yin posted a viral video to find her old friend. They successfully reconnected, and in August 2026, Sakolsky traveled to China to reunite with Yin and stand in the middle of the forest they co-created.
