Open-ocean shark attack rescue (Sydney, 2026)
Charlie Verco (25)
I nominate Charlie Verco for his selfless courage during a life-threatening shark attack at Coogee Beach. Upon spotting a shark attacking swimmer Leah Stewart, Charlie paddled his open-ocean board directly into the active danger zone without hesitation. Reaching the victim, he calmly hauled her onto his board and kept her head above water. Despite the ongoing threat of the shark nearby, he immediately applied critical emergency pressure to her wounds to control the bleeding until medical crews arrived. Charlie’s split-second decision to risk his own life directly saved a fellow Australian. His selflessness and composure under extreme duress deserves recognition.
