Anthony The Great

Saint Anthony the Great (c. 251–356 AD) was an Egyptian ascetic known as the "Father of Monasticism."

After his wealthy parents died, 20-year-old Anthony gave away the fortune to live in the Egyptian desert. He spent decades in absolute solitude, including 20 years inside an abandoned fort, surviving intense spiritual temptations through strict fasting and prayer.

His holiness attracted thousands of followers, effectively turning the lonely wilderness into a vibrant monastic movement. He died at age 105, and his widely read biography spread the monastic ideal across the Roman Empire.
