Anagārika Dharmapāla

"As an Anagārika in the Theravada tradition of Buddhism, we learned that good deeds are not only for others, but also for oneself. The most famous example is Anagārika Dharmapāla (1865-1933) of Sri Lanka, who chose to work in the world rather than live in the monastery. His good deeds are credited with saving Theravada Buddhism in his home country and spreading the teaching to America, among other things."
