Through the Peter Gilgan Foundation and personal gifts, he has donated well over $500 million (lifetime total cited in recent coverage), primarily to Canadian hospitals and health research. Notable recent gifts include $50 million for early cancer detection research at Princess Margaret and $60 million toward a major patient tower at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (where he and family members were born).
