Christianity became established in Ethiopia
Christianity became established in Ethiopia in the 4th century, during the reign of King Ezana of Aksum. Faith: The church is part of the Oriental Orthodox family and has its own ancient traditions and teachings. Bible: Its biblical tradition includes a broader canon than most Western Christian churches. Traditions: Fasting, prayer, colorful religious celebrations, and pilgrimages are very important. Major celebrations: Timkat (Epiphany), Meskel (Finding of the True Cross), and Genna (Christmas) are especially important. Famous places: Lalibela's rock-hewn churches and ancient monasteries are strongly associated with Ethiopian Orthodox heritage.
