Mountain Mover

"For most of his life, Dashrath Manjhi was a poor laborer living in an isolated village in India, separated from the nearest town by a mountain ridge. To get to the other side, villagers had to trek over the mountain or travel nearly 55 kilometers (34 miles) around it. In 1959, tragedy struck. Dashrath’s wife was crossing the ridge to bring him lunch while he worked in the fields. She slipped, fell down the rocky terrain, and was severely injured. Because of the mountain, getting her to medical help took hours. By the time they reached the hospital, she had sadly passed away. Grief-stricken but fueled by a deep resolve to ensure no one else would ever suffer the same fate, Dashrath made a monumental decision. ​It took Dashrath 22 years (from 1960 to 1982) of manual labor, but by the time he was done, he had successful carved a path right through the heart of the mountain."
