Fought genocide in Rwanda
Romeo Dallaire
Widely recognized for moral courage and ethical leadership. As force commander of the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) in 1993–1994, he warned of impending genocide, refused orders to withdraw (staying with a small contingent to protect civilians and bear witness), and later openly discussed his PTSD and “moral injury.” He has since advocated for human rights, against the use of child soldiers (through the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security), and for mental-health support for veterans and others. He has received honors including the Pearson Peace Medal and recognition from Canada’s Walk of Fame for his humanitarian work
