At Just 16, Norton Shocks the World and Inspires Thailand

Sixteen-year-old Thai table tennis prodigy Norton Jittapattar Prichayarn delivered a remarkable performance at the 2026 Asian Games, helping Thailand’s men’s team defeat China 3–2 in the semifinals. Ranked only No. 275 in the world, Norton stunned much higher-ranked opponents, including world No. 8 Lin Shidong and former world No. 1 Wang Chuqin. After losing his first match 4–11, he fought back to win 11–8, and later defeated Lin 11–6. In the final against Japan, Norton again impressed, winning both of his matches, although Thailand narrowly lost the team contest 2–3.

Norton has emerged as one of Thailand’s most promising young athletes. Rather than following a conventional school path, he has been homeschooled to devote more time to intensive table tennis training. He had already attracted international attention by partnering with Ploy Kulsas Wiriyakul to win the U15 mixed doubles world championship at the 2025 ITTF World Youth Championships in Romania, where they defeated a Chinese pair in the final.

His rapid progress has also earned him a 2026 ITTF Youth Grant, supporting his development on the international stage. With his composure, determination, and ability to challenge some of the world’s best players at just 16, Norton is increasingly being seen as an exciting new hope for Thai table tennis.
