When asked by local journalists what compelled him to jump into a life-or-death situation that adults were ignoring, Avory’s response showed a level of maturity well beyond his 11 years:

​“I grabbed him up and I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He's a human being. He should be treated as such.”
